Go Deep In South Dakota

State Offers Tourists More Than Just Mt. Rushmore

UPDATED: 2:47 am PDT October 22, 2009

South Dakota offers a variety of outdoor and family vacation options. From hunting destinations and hot springs to lakes that offer camping and water sports opportunities, adventure is waiting in South Dakota. And while you will doubtless want to take in the sight of Mount Rushmore during your vacation, there's so much more to South Dakota than that famous monument.

Wind Cave National Park is located near the town of Hot Springs. Wind Cave is long and complex, with many rooms and several unique formations. Tours through the cave are fascinating and educational. It is located in a national park that includes a large prairie and pine forest. You can relax at the hot springs, see a variety of wildlife, and even enjoy access to The Mammoth Site, the largest mammoth research center in the world. The entire area of Hot Springs provides insight into geology and paleontology.

President's Slide offers a lot of family fun. Located across the valley from Mount Rushmore, it provides a unique view of that presidential landmark that few people know is available. Children are allowed to ride down the alpine slide with their parents, so the whole family can enjoy an exciting view of Mount Rushmore and the beautiful scenery surrounding nearby Keystone, S.D. There is a scenic chairlift that takes visitors up the mountain, and can take them back down again if the slide proves too challenging. Food is grilled to order, providing a picnic feel.

WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort is the largest indoor waterpark in the Dakotas. Filled with water slides, a lazy river, arcade games and a variety of concessions, this is a perfect stop for a family vacation. Two hotels are conveniently adjoined, providing all the comforts and amenities you'll need. It is located in Rapid City, a town steeped in history and providing a number of activities including dining, shopping and golf. Rapid City is also a convenient location as it has an airport and can provide excellent access to the attractions in South Dakota.

Dakota Hotspots in Kennebec is perfect for the avid hunter. Pheasant hunting is the specialty of Dakota Hotspots, but there is also deer hunting available. A rustic lodge features a comfortable community atmosphere as well as a hot tub for a good soak after a satisfying day of hunting. It's great for the outdoor family with older children, as well as for groups of men or women looking to bond.

Mystic Miner Ski Resort at Deer Mountain provides 45 snow trails, ranging from beginner level to advanced. The resort gets its name from a fellow known as the Mystic Miner, who began working a claim in Deadwood Gulch in 1876. Today, the resort features a ski school, a terrain park and comfortable accommodations. It makes for great winter fun -- especially a trip to the Mine Shaft Tavern.
