Bedding Down On The Bayou

Accommodations Offer Charm

UPDATED: 3:13 pm PDT August 26, 2009

From noble, historic mansions and luxury, modern hotels to simple bed and breakfasts and campgrounds, Louisiana has it all in terms of accommodations.

Royal Sonesta Hotel, New Orleans

Located in the middle of the French Quarter, the Royal Sonesta reflects the classy style of this historic part of the city. The wrought-iron lace balconies are worth noticing. The nice courtyard with a pool and deck helps visitors relax from an exhausting day exploring the city. This four-star hotel really has it all and is not too expensive. Prices start at $89 per night.

AAE Bourbon House Hostel in New Orleans

On the other end of the scale is this hostel, with prices starting at $15.80 per night for a bed in a dorm. It is brand new, opened on Nov. 6, so don’t be afraid of the shabby hostel cliché. It is located in the trendy and safe neighborhood right off Magazine Street. Wi-Fi, kitchen use and common rooms are just some of the features available. Free shuttles to Greyhound and Amtrak stations are also offered.

Queen & Crescent Hotel

The Queen & Crescent Hotel lies somewhere in the middle of the scale: three stars, centrally located and $56 per night for a double room at lowest price. It has no pool and no restaurant, but it does offer a gym, breakfast and free Wi-Fii. The 1913 building is a fine example of the Renaissance Revival architectural style of the 19th century.

Fairchild House

If you are looking for a more individualistic accommodation, this bed and breakfast might fit the bill.

Situated among the picturesque oaks of the Lower Garden District of New Orleans, this 1841 Greek Revival home bed and breakfast is located 17 blocks from the French Quarter and 12 blocks from the Convention Center.

Rooms start at $65 per night including a huge continental breakfast.

Chemin-A-Haut State Park

For those who are planning to explore Louisiana’s nature and not the cities, Louisiana’s state parks and its campgrounds are the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Chemin-A-Haut is French for "high road," which describes an old trail used by the Native Americans for their seasonal migrations. This 503-acre park near the Louisiana-Arkansas state line is situated on a high bluff overlooking Bayou Bartholomew and is a natural paradise for lovers of unspoiled beauty. There are 26 campsites at the park, each including water and electricity. The spots in the primitive camping area start at $1 per night, but cabins for $70 or $90 are also available.
