The store opened in 1995 to some fanfare, and since that time it has only grown more popular with discerning Portlanders hunting for unique, out-of-the-ordinary and one-of-a-kind gifts - either for themselves or that special someone they hold dearly in their hearts.

Whether patrons find their way inside or shop online at the store's distinctive website, they will discover a broad range of cool, colorful and interesting items - skulls, candles, flags, furniture, antiques, religious icons and garments - at an assortment of price points, which means there is something for everyone here, from kiddies to adults. For the most part, items that are sold at The Gold Door were selected by the proprietor Jerry Shover or his expert staff in the course of their far-flung travels. It's not at all unusual to find rare items from Brazil, Mexico, Haiti and Africa bumping up against others that have been produced here in the Pacific Northwest by local artisans. --Travis Greenwood
