Portland Happy Hour: By the Glass or By the Bottle

By Cindy Anderson

It’s the nectar of the gods, so they say: wine. And getting a discounted glass — or bottle — at the end of the long workday can feel like the deal of the century. At these happy hours with great vino specials, just pair an appetizer or two with your libation and you’ve got a mini-gourmet meal for under $20 (or less!).

Basta’s Trattoria

Happy Hour: Mon - Fri 5:00pm - 6:30pm, 10:00pm - Close
Food specials: $3
Wine: All wine $2 off
Other drinks: Select beers $1 off
Atmosphere: Upscale, yet funky Italian bistro

Enjoy sipping your reds in this ex-TasteeFreez re-vamped with velvet drapes and kidney shaped tables and banquettes. Basta’s ("enough" in Italian) ensures you'll get your fill by offering plenty of unique Italian-based appetizers including carpaccio, polenta, antipasto and calamari. Bonus points for allowing outdoor sidewalk seating during Happy Hour!

Lucy's Table
Happy Hour: Mon - Fri 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Food specials: $2 - $4.50 (half-price)
Wine: $3.50 glass of red or white
Other drinks: $2.75 drafts, $4 cocktails
Atmosphere: Pottery Barn-ish simplicity

One of the best restaurants in town offers some of the very best Happy Hour food at a discount — and great drink specials, too! Absolutely delicious gourmet food: goat cheese ravioli, ribs, prawns, salads, beef brochettes and more. Sadly, their small bar fills up quickly, so get there early.

Sapphire Hotel
Happy Hour: Mon-Fri 4:00pm - 6:00pm, Sat-Sun 2:00pm - 6:00pm
Food specials: $3 - $5
Wine: $4 glass of red or white
Other drinks: $1 PBR tall boys, $3 wells, $5 drink-of-the-day
Atmosphere: Sexy, candlelit bar with boudoir accents

Invite your most special friends to enjoy this mysterious and intriguing ex-brothel. Sapphire’s new Happy Hour offers soup, salads, pita pizza, salmon cakes and their meze platter along with great wine selections. Two picnic tables out front offer limited outdoor seating during Happy Hour.

Wild Abandon
Happy Hour: Mon, Wed-Fri 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Food specials: $1 - $6
Wine: $18 carafes of red or white ($10.50 half-carafes)
Other drinks: $2 Miller High Life, $3.75 well, discounted cocktails
Atmosphere: Eclectic Tuscany with a bit of quirky Portland thrown in

Don't judge a book by it’s cover: While outside Wild Abandon appears as small as a roadside loveshack, inside it's cozy and artsy fine-dining. Happy Hour food is on the gourmet side with goat cheese tortas, salads, mussels, shrimp & polenta and chicken skewers. Is it summer yet? Their private and quiet back wooden deck is available at Happy Hour.

Runners-Up:
I would be remiss not to mention Pour and Thirst as a couple of the best places to enjoy a glass of wine at Happy Hour. While they don’t make the top five because they lack discounts and food specials quite on par with the aforementioned places, they are both two of the city’s best wine bars and are wonderful places for enjoying finer selections:

Pour Wine Bar & Bistro
Happy Hour: Daily 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Wine: $3 pours of red or white
Atmosphere: Very unique and striking 1960s-style Space Odyssey lounge

Thirst Wine Bar & Bistro
Happy Hour: Tues - Fri 3:00pm - 6:00pm & Daily 9:00pm - Close
Wine: $1 tastes of red or white, $1 off select wine glasses, $2 off select wine bottles
Bonus: $10 wine flights after 9:00pm
Atmosphere: Classic wine bar along the river with huge windows and a fireplace
