Need to get away? Rhode Island would make the perfect place for an affordable adventure. With its scenic shores and entertaining attractions, this is a place that will bring you big fun without making you break the bank.

Newport

Newport is filled with breathtaking scenery, including that of the Atlantic ocean dotted with sailboats. This natural landscape attracted many aristocratic families, such as the Vanderbilts, to the area in 18th century. A historical tour of the Newport Mansions grants an exclusive look into these lavish homes and allows them to stroll through the surrounding land, gardens and all. The Newport Mansions tour is now available regularly throughout the winter.

Providence

If you would like to experience Rhode Island's art scene, an ideal place to start is Providence. As home to both the Waterfire exhibit and the Rhode Island School Of Design Museum Of Art, you might find yourself wishing you'd planned a longer vacation.

If you're in the mood for a gallery of a different flavor, you'll want to check out the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University. Here, you'll find everything – including the kitchen sink. Rare cookware, unique gadgets and thousands of exotic cookbooks adorn the halls of the museum. You definitely won't want to walk through this place on an empty stomach.

Pawtucket

As long as you're delving into the rich history of Rhode Island, why not stop by Slater Mill? This National Historic Landmark is more of an interactive exhibit, where the lifestyle of the mill's immigrant founders is emulated by educated and charismatic role players. You'll find events being held here on a regular basis, such as knitting workshops and basket weaving seminars. If you'd like to use your wallet instead of your hands, a gift shop sells a large selection of old-fashioned soap and pottery, among other things.
