Still 'Cuckoo' After All These Years

Many Familiar Faces In One Of America's Best Films

In 1975, “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” became only the second film to win all five major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director.

It wasn’t the film that launched Jack Nicholson’s career, but it was the first time names like Brad Dourif and Christopher Lloyd were credited in a film. It also was one of Danny DeVito’s first films.

About a criminal who gets himself transferred from a jail to a mental institution, it was based on the book by author Ken Kesey and considered by many critics to be one of the best American films of all time.

The lead role of Randle McMurphy seemed tailor-made for Nicholson. And it wasn’t the last time he played someone with questionable mental health in a movie.

One of his well-known later roles was as Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel “The Shining” in 1980.

He also played the Joker in 1989’s “Batman” film and an obsessive compulsive writer in 1997’s “As Good As It Gets.”

Christopher Lloyd, who played Taber, later went on to costar with DeVito in TV’s “Taxi” and other memorable roles like Dr. Emmett Brown in the “Back To The Future” series and upcoming films “Jack And The Beanstalk” and “The Return Of Captain Kidd.”

In addition to “Taxi,” DeVito went on to star in many huge hits in the 1980s and 1990s, including “Romancing The Stone,” “The War Of The Roses,” “Throw Momma From The Train” and “Twins.”

Louise Fletcher won Best Actress for her role as the authoritative Nurse Ratched. She’s had an extensive film and TV career, including spots on “Perry Mason,” “Picket Fences,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “ER” and “Heroes.”

Dourif, who played Billy Bibbit in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” is also one of Hollywood’s most-recognized faces. He’s starred in “Dune,” “The Lord Of The Rings” series and “Deadwood.” He also did the voice of the evil doll, Chucky, in the “Child’s Play” series.

One of Hollywood’s best character actors, Vincent Schiavelli, who played Frederickson, died of lung cancer in 2005. He made more than 120 television and film appearances, including many films by Milos Forman, who directed “Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Forman won Best Director for the film. He later directed such critical favorites as “Ragtime,” “Amadeus” and “Man On The Moon.”

The film won Academy Awards for not only Nicholson (Best Actor), Fletcher (Best Actress), Forman (Best Director) and the film's screenwriters, but also for a young actor by the name of Michael Douglas.

If you don't remember Douglas, who was in his early 30s when the movie was filmed and released, appearing in the film, that's because he didn't. However, he moonlighted as a producer on the film while also starring in the TV series "The Streets of San Francisco" with Karl Malden, earning himself and fellow producer Saul Zaentz the Oscar hardware at the 1976 Academy Awards ceremony.

Douglas' father, legendary actor Kirk Douglas, originated the role of McMurphy in a stage production and bought the film rights, hoping to play McMurphy on the screen. After several years, he passed the production rights to his son.

Actor James Caan was originally offered the lead role of McMurphy, and Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were considered as well, before Nicholson was given the role.

Besides it five Oscar wins, the film also earned nominations for its score, cinematography and editing and for Dourif as Best Supporting Actor.
