Accommodations In Alaska: Suites, Lodges, Bed And Breakfasts

Despite the fact that Alaska is probably the least-developed state in the Union, thus earning its nickname the "Last Frontier," there are still plenty of great places to stay.

You can choose suites with an indoor pool in Anchorage or a remote private cabin close to North America's tallest mountain.

Here are some of the most reasonable -- and fun -- places to stay in Alaska:

  • Alaskan Suites: Not too far from Seldovia on the Kenai Peninsula is the Alaskan Suites in Homer, which feature private cabins overlooking the city and Kachemak Bay. It earned a TripAdvisor review of 4.5 out of 5 and features and offers easy access to fishing, water sports on the bay and shopping on the Homer Spit. Rates start at $110 per night.
  • Aspen Haus Bed and Breakfast: While you're visiting Denali National Park, another great place to stay is the Aspen Haus Bed and Breakfast, which is just 12 miles north of the park's entrance in Healy. According to its Web site, Aspen Haus' private cabins come with views of the Alaska range, private baths, queen beds and microwave ovens. Rates start at $119 per night.
  • Motel Nord Haven: Another option for those visiting Denali National Park, Motel Nord Haven is also in Healy. The 28-room hotel offers a 35-person meeting room with a cozy fireplace and a forest view. Catering is also available. "This fresh little gray hotel with a red roof has large, immaculate rooms, each with one or two queen-size beds," according to Frommer's. "They're equal to the best standard rooms in the Denali Park area and a lot less expensive." Rates start at $75 per night.
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Anchorage: When staying in Alaska's largest city, it's hard to beat the convenience of the Homewood Suites by Hilton Anchorage, which is midtown and just minutes from the Anchorage airport. Suites feature kitchens or kitchenettes and guests get access to an indoor pool, tennis courts and nearby activities, such as fishing, hiking and skiing. Rates start at $99, according to Hotels.com.
  • Caribou Lodge Talkeetna: The Caribou Lodge is above the timberline in the Talkeetna Mountains near Mount McKinley and Denali National Park. It offers views of the mountain (on clear days) and plenty of opportunities to view wildlife, such as caribou, moose, grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes and eagles. "A small and personal operation without the crowds, Caribou Lodge offers a relaxed learning experience with an Alaskan wilderness family," according to its Web site. Base rate is more expensive: $310 per person per day.
